Electronic Shutter

During my one-on-one workshop, my student was using a Fujifilm XT-1 and although my discussion is focused the theory of photography, I cannot disregard the different approach in handling this type of camera.

Fujifilm has no aperture or shutter priority in the shooting mode dial. It works like the classic camera where the aperture control is on the lens and where the auto aperture setting also resides. If you’re a DSLR user, it may take you longer than the usual to get familiar with the way settings are controlled in Fujifilm cameras.

Since I’m no expert in Fujifilm, I visited Ryan Go of F8 to give some few experts advice and true to what I’ve expected, there were a handful of info that I didn’t know. One of which that spiked my interest is the rolling shutter limitation when using electronic shutter. This happens if you turn off the mechanical shutter and let the electronic shutter control the exposure time.

My first reaction was, how come I didn’t know about this. Maybe because I had so much fun with my Canon G11 having flash sync up to 1/1000 sec. I was also experimenting a lot with Fujifilm X100s having high flash sync as well. Which part did I missed out that a rolling shutter limitation exist?

When using electronic shutter and turning of mechanical shutter, the delay in the CMOS sensor readout causes the stretched effect. This only happens when shooting at high speed setting and fast moving objects.

Camera make and Sinulog Photo Contest

Firstly, I would like to congratulate the winners of Sinulog Photo Contest 2016. Secondly, I would like to personally congratulate my student Mr. Ryann Ablen for bagging the 1st place under the Contingent Category. I guess it’s try again for next year for those who didn’t make it. Maybe the Gods of luck will be on our side next time.

I will have to say that the results of the judging this year has improved. Not there yet but getting better. Kudos to the staff behind the photo contest and let’s make it better next year. Among the many congratulatory post in facebook, I stumbled upon a post by a photographer friend Carlito Felicen or more popularly know as Kangkang. He is a consistent placer and he made it again this year.

I’m a strobe guy. When I do commercial shoot, my gears for lighting couldn’t fit in my car anymore. Although I’m a worshiper of light, I have a love and hate relationship with the sun. I like to control every inch of light that sums up in my frame.

However, when you’re shooting events or wedding, there is no take two. You are shooting as it happens and if your light is not in the right position and settings, all you can do is do better next time. Back to Megapixels Race

Canon recently released their upgrade to 5D Mark III. This time they are maxing out the megapixel a 35mm sensor can accommodate. The new 5DS and 5DS R is packed with 50 megapixels. I feel bad for the photodiode having no room to breathe. In some forums, they claim that it’s not technically possible to get effective 50 megapixels.

Of course the laws of physics cannot be recreated so when you amplify one aspect of the sensor in recording light, you’ll have to pull down some other aspects. In the case of Canon, the newly released 5D chose megapixel over ISO. They claim that in commercial photography, ISO is not an issue since shots are mostly done in a controlled lighting environment.
